“What´s going on at ABRE”

Unilever presents actions and plans for sustainability

Leader in 9 of the 13 segments involved in Brazil , Unilever has an audacious proposal for the next years: to double its size, reducing it environmental impact. The challenge is part of its mission and involves three global targets: reduce in 50% the environmental footprint of products; improve life and work conditions of people, specially the ones that participate in the agriculture chain; and improve the health of 1 billion people. The focus in the agricultural chain is due to the fact that the company consumes 12% of the Black tea produce in the world, 6% of the tomato, 3% of the palm oil and 2% of the soy.

As Jorge Kostrich, from the Sustainability area of the company, explained in the ABRE's event in November, the solutions go through the Sustainability Plan that Unilever has. According to him, today 26% of the environmental impact of the company are generated by raw materials and 69% are generated in the moment of consumption. “In this consumption, we consider that primary packaging has a participation of 61%, secondary packaging of 13% and products waste of 26%.”

Unilever also has a Sustainability Committee coordinated by the VPs of Commnication, Supply Chain and Sales areas. Among the main actions of this Committee are the communication campaign “Each action counts” (“Cada gesto conta”) and the Sustainability Report that exists since 2003 and was responsible for Unilever receiving, in 2010, an A+ evaluation from GRI (Global Report Initiative).

Regarding packaging, Unilever expects from suppliers more precise actions. As an example, Kostrich presented the Comfort concentrated case in which it was possible to reduce the consumption of cardboard boxes in 52%, the use of plastics in 58% and the use of water in the formulation in 78%.
